Additional Considerations for WFI Observations
This article summarizes additional considerations for planning new observations with the Roman Wide Field Instrument (WFI). These topics highlight special or non-standard observing scenarios that may require particular attention during proposal development. In the future, some of these items may be expanded into dedicated articles with more detailed guidance.
Considerations for Time Series Observations
Time series observations are implemented in the Astronomer's Proposal Tool (APT) using Linking Requirements. Two types of temporal links are available:
- The After Special Requirement, which links observations by specifying the execution order of passes and a minimum time interval between them.
- The Time Series Special Requirement, which links observations by specifying a fixed PERIOD and a TOLERANCE to constrain the temporal links.
Using the Time Series Special Requirement
For the Time Series Special Requirement, the Astronomer's Proposal Tool (APT) enforces an allowed range for the PERIOD of 4.0 days to 365.0 days . As a result, time series observations implemented using this mechanism are limited to cadences within this range. Observations requiring time series cadences shorter than 4 days may be permitted when supported by a strong scientific justification. Proposals requesting such cadences must include this justification in the proposal text, and proposers are encouraged to contact the Roman Help Desk for guidance on the technical implementation of these observations in APT and coordination with the Roman Science Operations Center (SOC).
Proposals requesting Time Series with a PERIOD shorter than 4 days must provide a strong scientific justification and should contact the Roman Help Desk for assistance with APT implementation and SOC coordination.
Considerations for Calibration Observations
The project-level Calibration Working Group has developed an extensive On-Orbit Calibration Plan that ensures the collection of sufficient calibration data to meet the Roman Mission's calibration requirements. However, there may be some science cases that require additional calibration observations.
The On-Orbit Calibration Plan is under review by the Calibration Working Group. The details of mission-provided calibration activities are subject to change due to this review. Users interested in proposing additional calibration observations should please contact the Roman Help Desk for support. Please include a brief scientific motivation and an outline of the needed observations.
